Blue Orange Green Pink Purple

Welcome to our blog...the place where we post updates on our life and ministry, along with various family photos along the way. We try to keep it current but sometimes our schedules don't allow us to update it as often as we'd like, so please check back often.

AWANA - a lesson that blessed in the end

Aurora just loves AWANA and when it was time for the practices for the AWANA games to start she enrolled and was very excited. We learned at the end of the first practice that 1 girl was going to have to be cut from the team, in order to meet the new rules for team size that had been established. The kids were told that they'd be "judged" the following week on their attendance, participation, attitude and contribution to the team. When it was all done, the Commander said that ALL of the girls had done a great job and couldn't decide who to cut. So they put the girls names into a hat to draw the person who would have to be cut. The tension was thick! Dan was there to pick up Aurora and witnessed the entire drama. The Commander pulled a slip of paper from the hat and read the name...."Aurora Branda". Instantly the tears began to fall, not just from her face, but from the eyes of all her girl friends. They all huddled around her crying and hurt. It was a long drive home that day and she was crushed (to say the least). Her friend called her later that evening to encourage her and another friend wrote her a long letter inviting her to a sleep-over and then asking her to still come and cheer for the team at the games. We talked to her about what God could teach her from all of this, and also what we as parents had to learn when we couldn't "fix" something and had to stand and watch her get hurt. The decision process was very fair and we explained to her that it was just as difficult on her Commander as it was on her as the loser. We prayed about it together and wrote a letter to Commander Laurie to encourage her and also told Aurora that it was entirely up to her if she would go to watch the games. Later that week they asked her to still come to the practices so she could be ready to fill-in if someone got sick and missed the competition. She wanted to do that and went faithfully every week. This past Saturday was the competition and she went with her friend (after spending the night at her house) and not only did they allow our Commander to add her to the roster and play in the games, but our church WON FIRST PLACE!! God blessed her after she learned a tough growing lesson! How neat is that? We were thrilled for her and the rest of the kids!

A Tribute to President Bush

As our country is in the midst of change - both in command and economically, I thought this video expressed a lot of the gratitude we have for George W. Bush and what he did for our country. He is a good man! (BE SURE TO TURN OFF THE MUSIC AT THE BOTTOM OF OUR BLOG BEFORE YOU PLAY THIS VIDEO AND SONG BY STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN)....

Our Trip to Brasil...

We were able to take a trip to Brasil in November. It was the first time we had returned since we left there in 2002. It was fantastic. Since Aurora had no memories of our life there everything was new to her. She loved the different foods, sights, culture, weather and meeting new people. She often tired of hearing portuguese but was a great sport about it. We had a great time with Dan's sister, Dawn, and her family. Dan spoke to various groups 11 times in the short time we were there. It was emotional being back in the church his parents had started, and having the opportunity to see their old cottage on the lake. It brought back alot of memories and made us miss them so much more. But we're thankful we had the privilege to share those places with Aurora. We're thankful for those who contributed to our trip and for the many blessings we received by going and ministering and reconnecting with old friends, and even making some new ones!

Sunflower fields...

We happened on this huge sunflower farm - acres and acres of gorgeous yellow and orange flowers, some towering over us, some small that we could hold in our hands...yet ALL of them bringing a smile to our faces!

First Day of School...

Well, I'm behind on updating our blog since this is now the start of the 3rd week of school already.... Aurora started 3rd grade this year and is loving it! She has a man teacher and so far says he is the best teacher ever! Like I said, it's only the third week of school. But we're all happy! They're already done with review and into learning new things - multiplication! I didn't think we were done with subtraction yet, but apparently the curriculum says otherwise. So we're still working on subtraction flashcards at home, while adding multiplication in too! Yesterday Aurora was reading a Nancy Drew book that she got from the library and I started to ask her questions about the story...it peaked my curiosity and before you know it, we had read together for 2 1/2 hrs.! We couldn't put the book down - every chapter ending leaves you hanging...so we kept reading! It was fun and brought back alot of memories from my childhood when I'd read the Nancy Drew series and the Hardy Boys! WE LOVE THIRD GRADE!

ME Conf = $170, MK Limo ride = PRICELESS!

The coordinators of the MK childrens program at our annual ABWE Missionary Enrichment conference surprised all of the kids with a special limo ride to McDonalds, with special people inside the limo, and an ice cream treat awaiting them when they arrived. They rolled out the red carpet for the kids to enter the limo and made them feel extra special as they rode to McD's in style! Aurora loved it. It was the highlight of the week for our MK's! It was also a very poignant reminder of just how special they are (& all of us) to God - His special children that He has called to serve Him and to love Him...and to love OTHERS!
Made me think today just how special I am to the LORD! Thank you Jesus for making each of us (Dan, Aurora and I) a child of the KING!
